‘Trauma can be any stressful life event where we feel helpless or overwhelmed’

Louise is passionate about supporting people in their recovery from traumatic events. She wholeheartedly believes that healing from trauma is possible, and that we can be free from the coping mechanisms (behaviours, addictions etc) that we use to help us survive and 'function', but that may also prevent us from feeling the full range of experience of being our true selves in the world.

About Louise

Louise, a registered nurse and accredited psychotherapist, has spent the majority of her career working in the NHS. Having spent many years as a nurse in ICU, her interest in supporting people following their survival of a critical illness, led her to re-train as a counsellor/psychotherapist. Since then, Louise has worked closely with NHS staff, patients and family members developing her speciality in trauma therapy as well as undertaking further training in trauma processing and self-regulation techniques. She has also done research in this field.

Approach

Louise's integrative approach to trauma therapy is one where our human response to an overwhelming event is normalised. She will explore with you what happens in the brain when we feel under threat to help you understand your trauma response. Louise focuses on the ‘mind-body’ connection to aid self-regulation and grounding when traumatic material is ‘triggered’.

Trauma therapy facilitates us to feel the feelings that we were unable to feel at the time of the traumatic event in a safe gentle way to avoid overwhelm. This is done from a position of ‘resource’ within the individual. Such resourcing can be used in our daily lives to help us when we are feeling anxious, angry, overwhelmed etc, and also in the therapy session to help us stay with difficult emotions. Once we are able to connect with the emotions that we have been avoiding/ detached from /didn't know existed, we can feel them fully and then finally let them go.

Louise offers:

  • Body based grounding and self-regulation techniques to use when feeling anxiety, panic, anger, disconnected from the body, difficulty sleeping etc.
  • Non-judgemental, respectful environment to get in touch with what your body is telling you.
  • Counselling/Psychotherapy - psychodynamic & person centred approaches
  • Comprehensive Resource Model (CRM) – ‘a novel therapeutic approach which uniquely bridges neuroscience and spirituality through a combination of somatic therapy, traditional psychotherapy and indigenous healing concepts to provide effective relief to survivors of trauma.’

About Trauma

Trauma may leave you feeling:

  • Disconnected from the body
  • Sensations in the body - ‘knot or butterflies’ in the tummy, tight chest, stiff neck/jaw, teeth grinding
  • Mind is ‘racing’
  • Anxiety
  • Panic
  • Anger
  • Tearful
  • Jumpy or easily startled
  • Numb
  • Detached

 You may experience:

  • Nightmares
  • Flashbacks
  • Unexplained physical pain
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Avoiding thinking about/reminders of a stressful life event
  • Re-living an event as if it was happening now
  • Not being able to remember anything about it

Due to known high rates of PTSD, anxiety and depression following an experience of critical illness, Louise has done research into how counselling might help people [Results due to be published]. She is currently developing a care pathway for people following critical illness to support their recovery journey. She also works with NHS staff who are themselves at risk of trauma due to the nature of their work.
