Raw Chocolate

A 2015 study from the University of Aberdeen, the results of which have been published in the British Medical Journal's "Heart" magazine, has looked at the eating habits of more than 20,000 middle-aged and elderly people, and concluded that eating a moderate amount of chocolate a day may lower the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Great news for all chocolate fans out there, indeed. However, I would add that it is important to eat the right kind of chocolate. A lot of the widely available chocolate bars that we can easily buy in shops actually have a very low cocoa content and are packed with added milk powder and sugar. Not so good.

Cacao is a superfood and has been cultivated for thousands of years in Mexico and South America where it would have been eaten raw. In conventional chocolate, the cocoa beans are cooked and, in doing so, they lose a lot of their beneficial effects. Raw chocolate is an excellent, and very tasty, way to eat chocolate because it comes straight from the tree to the bar with no roasting thus retaining all its nutritional complexity. And it really is a powerhouse of good stuff containing, as it does, huge sources of Calcium, Zinc and Magnesium. As if that wasn’t enough, it can reduce appetite, which makes it an excellent weight loss tool, as well as having powerful fat burning qualities which are lost in cooked chocolate

If you need even more excuses to eat raw chocolate, it acts as an anti-depressant and balances the mood and, to top it all, it is ethically sourced and supports the communities that produce it.
