Oil and Tea of the Month - Sleep Special

As much as we all welcome the shorter nights now that summer is well and truly here, it can be a real issue for those who struggle with sleep. This year round problem for many people often reaches its peak in the summer months: if the early morning light doesn’t get you then the exuberant dawn chorus certainly will!

Sleep problems come in all shapes and sizes – for example, some people just can’t fall asleep whereas others have no problem dropping off but then find themselves wide awake from the small hours onwards. For some, it’s a lifelong battle, for others insomnia rears its head at times of stress or change.

So what, practically, can be done? Here at D. Atkinson Herbalist we have spent years perfecting the recipe for our Sweet Sleeps, a popular traditional formula to calm a busy mind and help one relax, supporting a restful night’s sleep. Valerian has a long history of use as a gentle sedative with valerian teas traditionally taken as a popular bedtime drink. Skullcap is used for its muscle relaxing properties and to ease mental tension and anxiety whilst Passionflower and Hops are gentle carminative herbs. This blend can be used occasionally or regularly to help establish a healthy sleep pattern.

D. Atkinson Sleep Tea is a relaxing, sedative combination of herbs which promotes restful sleep without drowsy after effects. It also helps to ease anxiety and supports relaxation. Containing Chamomile, Hops tops, Lavender, Lemon Balm, Passionflower and Valerian, you should infuse two teaspoons per cup and drink 2-3 cups in the evening as required.

Lavender essential oil is great for sleep, promoting a good night’s rest without being heavily sedating. Because lavender oil is very gentle, you can apply it directly to you skin (it’s also great for burns) and so dabbing some on your temples before settling down for the night is always a good move. You could also put a few drops on your pillow as well as using a diffuser or an oil burner for a while before sleeping (remember to extinguish all candles before dropping off to sleep though!)
