Golden Milk

I’ve written before about the great benefits of Garlic and Echinacea for strengthening the immune system but I’d also like to bring to your attention the benefits of combining honey and Turmeric (Curcumin) to create an effective natural remedy to help boost the body’s natural defences.

Although well known as a spice, Turmeric as a powerful nutritional supplement is largely overlooked by many people. It contains compounds called curcuminoids, which have impressive medicinal properties, the most important of which is Curcumin. Curcumin has powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a strong antioxidant as well as being effective at wiping out bad bacteria. It is also anti-carcinogenic and is used in the management of cancer. Some studies indicate that taking Turmeric (Curcumin) as a supplement can reduce the risk of heart disease, improve brain function, help in the management of arthritis and can be beneficial in the treatment of depression.

Manuka raw honey is not only fantastic for soothing sore throats but also has antibacterial qualities and anti-inflammatory actions both internally and externally. The combination of raw honey and Turmeric has long been recognized in Aryuvedic and Tibetan medicine as a powerful natural remedy and has become known as ‘Golden Milk’.

At the first sign of a cold or even if you’re just feeling a bit run down, try making some Golden Milk for yourself. You will need:

5 ounces or 100 grams of raw honey

1 tablespoon of Turmeric powder – this needs to be a medicinal quality Turmeric powder and not the spice that you find in your cupboard. We sell it here.

Add the Turmeric to the honey, mix well and take half a teaspoon every hour, decreasing to half a teaspoon three times a day by the third day.

As well as Turmeric powder D. Atkinson Herbalist sells our own brand of strong Curcumin Capsules which also contain Boswellia and added black pepper. These have a high level of curcumin with the black pepper helping with the bioavailability of Turmeric and the Boswellia (frankincense) having anti-inflammatory actions. This product was developed by our herbal team for use in clinic and is a practitioner strength product.

*If you are taking other medications, especially blood thinning medicines, or suffer from gall bladder problems, please consult a medical herbalist before using Turmeric capsules.
