Nutritional Therapy

Nutritional Therapy aims to change an individual's metabolism from an unbalanced state which may be causing minor or distressing symptoms and which may ultimately lead to diagnosable disease to a state of balance, allowing the body to return to optimum health. The process takes the form of a one-on-one consultation between client and therapist.

The first consultation may take up to 1 hour and will usually include taking a detailed history of health problems, medical and family history, plus diet and lifestyle factors. The client may be asked to fill in a questionnaire prior to consultation and to seek medical advice to eliminate underlying disease.

A nutritional assessment is then made, sometimes with the help of a questionnaire and appropriate laboratory tests, and dietary and lifestyle changes will be recommended, often supported by nutritional supplements based on individual needs and circumstances.

Through regular consultations and adjustments to the nutritional programme, the aim is to work in a series of stages to nourish and support the body's innate healing processes with the aim of achieving an optimum state of health for the individual.

The Nutritional Therapy Descriptor

Nutritional Therapy is the application of nutrition science in the promotion of health, peak performance and individual care. Nutritional therapy practitioners use a wide range of tools to assess and identify potential nutritional imbalances and understand how these may contribute to an individual's symptoms and health concerns. This approach allows them to work with individuals to address nutritional balance and help support the body towards maintaining health.

Practitioners consider each individual to be unique and recommend personalised nutrition and lifestyle programmes rather than a 'one size fits all' approach. Practitioners never recommend nutritional therapy as a replacement for medical advice and always refer any client with 'red flag' signs or symptoms to their medical professional. They will also frequently work alongside a medical professional and will communicate with other
healthcare professionals involved in the client's care to explain any nutritional therapy programme that has been provided.

Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA)

Dr Ilenia Paciarotti offers a unique service called Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA). The client’s nutritional status will be assessed with the help of the most advance technology in the field of nutrition. This completely pain-free test assesses the nutritional status, metabolism, fat mass, fat free mass, water retention and cellular integrity and basal metabolic rate. These measurements give a clear picture of the body composition, the rate of the subject‘s metabolism and where the weight is coming from (water, excess fat etc.). Moreover, in cases of chronic condition it gives important information on muscle wasting, oedema etc. For this reason the BIA test is now essential to design a bespoke dietary plan and to monitor changes over time. BIA is especially helpful with the following:

  • Weight loss and maintenance
  • Ketogenic Diets
  • Children, adults, fertility, pregnancy and elderly
  • Sport and fitness
  • Children’s behaviour and learning
  • Chronic disease prevention and recovery (including chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, hypertension, rheumatoid arthritis etc.)
  • IBS - the LOWFODMAP diet
  • Advice during and after cancer treatment
